Bedroom Fireplace Ideas
Posted on: 1st August 2018
Older houses, particularly Victorian ones, traditionally feature a fireplace in the bedroom. This is because the fireplace was considered to be the heart of the home and not to mention, a wholesome and attractive characteristic that was embraced by the affluent. In large Victorian properties, the fire would provide an immediate source of heat in bitterly cold winters, and although a bedroom fireplace may seem unusual today (what with central heating), there’s no reason why it can’t still be a ‘wow’ factor within your home. Whilst it can be tempting to block fireplaces up or disguise them, why not try working with their beauty and bring style back to an old tradition.

Period features, when restored properly, can be the selling feature to your home. If your cast-iron fireplace looks a little worse for wear, it can be sandblasted or covered in a thick paint, to make it look more aesthetically pleasing and modern.
Have a new surround
If the original style of your fireplace isn’t to your liking, install a new surround and mantlepiece. You can dress your fireplace up or down, depending on how much emphasis you would like to give it. Whatever your style, budget or taste, you can choose something that’s entirely you. There’s a whole range of surrounds and mantels – from rustic to ultra-modern – just find what’s right for you.
Ultra modern and sleek
For the minimalists out there that feel quite overwhelmed by their large bedroom fireplace, strip it back and replace the bulky surround with something plain. Minimalism can give your old traditional fireplace the contemporary look it needs to stay in keeping with the rest of your home.
Although it’s not common, a log fire in the bedroom is an absolute luxury. Log fires are romantic, they’re calming and not to mention a fantastic way to create a restful atmosphere, and in a bedroom that’s exactly what we need! Expose the brick around your log burner for stylistic purposes and create a quirky cabin vibe so that you can always be in your own little paradise. Draw the eye with your log fire and enjoy its potential.
Limestone surrounds & styling ideas
If you like the beachy or neutral aesthetics, a limestone fireplace surround can offer your home a relaxing and cool atmosphere. If you have a fresh/organic palette throughout your home, this style of surround will look wonderful. This elegant and smooth material adds a softer touch to your fireplace and is decorative as well as functional.
Electric fires and variants
For a stylish and contemporary finish, electric and hole in the wall fires are space saving features that you will be thankful for. Electric fires are incredibly attractive and clean because they are coal-free, ideal for those looking for little maintenance, so you needn’t worry about messy soot and ash. Electric fireplaces are perfect for those smaller bedrooms too, because they do not take up as much room but also offer something quite unique.
Styling a surround without a fireplace – hearth fillers
If you do not wish to use your fireplace, decorate your surround with fairy lights, hang a large piece of art over the top and place a variety of different sized white candles at the foot of the fireplace, where the fire would be. This unconventional fire can look stunning when decorated well; remember to aim for symmetry to get the very best out of your fireplace.
