Fun Christmas Mantel Ideas
Posted on: 30th November 2017
It might be hard to believe, but Christmas is almost here once more! If the stresses of the season are already taking their toll, then why not take some time out to relax? Decorating your home for Christmas doesn’t have to be a hassle, in fact, it’s a great way to let your creative side loose. Traditionally, the fireplace is the heart of the home and there are plenty of ways to dress up your mantle to spread Christmas joy throughout your home. Here are just a few ideas to get you start
Traditional Christmas theme
Whether you have a coal effect fire or a wood burning stove, the flame-glow goes hand in hand with the old fashioned Christmas theme. You can be as extravagant or as minimal as you want, but the key here is to focus on vintage decorations – those that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Victorian sitting room. Wreaths, holly, stockings and candles are all musts, and you can also put your own twist on things with any old family favourite decorations you might have tucked away.
Bring a sparkle to your mantelpiece with Christmas-centric glamour. It can be easy to go all-out if you want to, with silver and white decorations peppered across the mantle and hearth. Multi-coloured wreaths and miniature fibre/LED christmas trees can add extra shine, and glow in the dark versions will glimmer during those dim winter evenings. And make sure you don’t forget about the tinsel or fairy lights!
Homemade advent calendar
Make things more engaging by hanging an interactive advent calendar across the mantle. An easy way to do this is to hang 24 (or 25!) red envelopes on a line or two of string. Number them and put a little surprise in each. Little toys, bite size sweets, fun puzzles or clues for hidden gifts around the home, you can really make each day feel personalised to your family, while slowly building up to the big day.
In-keeping with the homemade feel, why not create your own range of decorations to adorn you harth and mantelpiece? Simple paper decorations like angels, stars or coloured trees can be made easily by you and your children, or you could tackle something more elaborate like a homemade snow globe, for example. A Christmas collage is a creative, collaborative way to celebrate the season, and it’s fun to see all the personal touches each member of the family adds to it. Even something as simple as spelling the words ‘Merry Christmas’ with handcrafted cards or coloured paper can bring the mantle to life. Experiment. Get the family involved and see where the Christmas spirit takes you.
Think of your hearth and mantle as a blank canvas or a stage. You can create charming festive scenes with small ornaments, models and figurines. You could buy a Christmas village display, craft the pieces yourself, recreate a favourite scene from a Christmas film or book – there are limitless possibilities! Just remember to stay safe and keep any flammable parts away from open flames.
For wood burning stoves or any fireplace with a live flame, decorating your mantle piece should be done so with great care. When hanging stockings, be clever and don’t hang them too close to the fireplace itself. Weighted stocking hangers placed on top of the mantle is a safe way to hang them without fear of your stockings falling loose, and definitely make sure to steer clear of suction cups, sticky tape or glue – anything that could lose grip from the nearby heat.
